Wouldn't it be a good idea if the developers of SMART and the owners of the copyright would put SMART also under the GNU license or a similar kind of Open SOurce copyright? To be sure, SMART is distributed as source and already everybody can hack it at his/her hearts content. Putting it on a more firm legal base would probably give a fresh impetus to SMART development. Appendix A of each TREC proceedings (on the website under the "Publications" link) gives the evaluation output of each of the runs submitted to that year's TREC. The program used to evaluate TREC runs, trec_eval, was written by Chris Buckley (of SMART fame) and is a variant of the evaluation code that is part of SMART. trec_eval is a stand-alone package (i.e., it does not rely on the rest of SMART). The other documentation that could be useful is in the Doc directory in the Smart system, and the documentation of the different programs that in my opinion assumes that you already know the details of the implementation. I have modified and added new modules to SMART and is not too difficult. Good luck! Miguel Ruiz > > > > Hello : > > We are making a project, that uses smart. Is there any document that explains it, like a user guide or something ? 2 - Is there any paper that explains informations retrieval used by smart (for beginers ?) 3 - I understand that if I run a query with more than one word, smart answers me like a OR operation. How can I retrieve documents using a kind of AND operation ? 4 - Is there a way of add documents to the collection, using the smart interface or is that just possible by changing the colection 'manualy'? 5 - What does it mean the parameter top.inter when you start smart by doing "smart top.inter spec_file" ? I know that there are another ways of running smart...is there any guide that talks about it in a simple way ? I already download the document " Implementation of smart information retrieval system, but it doesen't look very usefull for the answers I am looking for. The documentation that is available for SMART is in the Doc directory. See the howto subdirectory that has different files that explain how to use SMART. There is also a tutorial created by Hans Paijmans. It is available in http://pi0959.kub.nl:2080/Paai/Onderw/Smart/hands-on-tekst.html#indexing I don't know how useful it could be for you but just take a look to it. It is a step by step explanation of how to use SMART and solutions to common problems. I will try to answer your questions. > > 1 - I don't understand many od the options that appear in the menu. Is > there any document that explains it, like a user guide or something ? Look at the Doc directory that is distributed with SMART. You can also find explanation of theory behind SMART in: - Salton, G. & McGill "Introduction to modern Information Retrieval". McGraw Hill, 1983. - Salton, G. The SMART retrieval system; experiments in automatic document processing. Prentice-Hall 1971 There are many more articles that focus on particular experiments with SMART (ie. Retrieval feedback, document weighting, etc. but they don't show you how to use SMART) > > 2 - Is there any paper that explains informations retrieval used by smart > (for beginers ?) use the tutorial, and Salton's books. Hans also has some materials developed for his information retrieval class. > > 3 - I understand that if I run a query with more than one word, smart > answers me like a OR operation. How can I retrieve documents using a kind > of AND operation ? SMART implements the Vector Space Mode. In this model the query and document are represented as a vector of words (or stems). A query is matched against all the documents that contain at least one of the query words (OR). these documents are ranked according to the similarity value between the query and document. In the SMART system there is no way (at least that I know) of making a logical AND. The best you can do is limit the number of documents retrieved to the top N ranked documents (where N is defined in the retrieval script by the parameter num_wanted). Also you will see that the weighting scheme is very important because just using a different weighting scheme produces a different ranking. > > 4 - Is there a way of add documents to the collection, using the smart > interface or is that just possible by changing the collection 'manualy'? > The only way to add documents to smart is using the options "index" or "reindex" and this means that you have to have a spec file and run smart in batch. If you are building a java interface I think that it shouldn't be difficult to make a system call that runs the SMART indexing using a spec file build by your java application. It is not an elegant or efficient solution but it should work (see the admin, and modify files in the documentation). The other alternative is to build an interface that uses the smart libraries (that is what I understand you want to do). There is an X interface that is supposed to work in SunView but I never have tried it. It is in the ftp site at Cornell. > 5 - What does it mean the parameter top.inter when you start smart by > doing "smart top.inter spec_file" ? I know that there are another ways of > running smart...is there any guide that talks about it in a simple way ? > This is the way to run SMART in interactive mode (for retrieval only). This activates the part of Smart that uses the text based interactive interface (see the programs in src/libinter for more details). Check the files in howto that describe different ways of using SMART for indexing, converting documents, retrieving, viewing results, etc. > Sorry for all the questions, but I couldn;t find anyone in Portugal that > knows anything about smart. > > It's OK. That is what this list is for. I think that now you need to read carefully the documentation and try to understand how SMART works. It may take you some time but I can tell you that it's worthed the effort. > Thanks > > Miguel > You are welcome. Could be several things. One very possible error is in query numbering. My guess is that if you print out your queries (smprint vec ...), you'll see they start numbering at 1 when you want them to start with 301. This causes problems if the relevance judgements for those queries start at 301 (By default, the retrieve program sees if there are any relevant documents for this query (eg query 1), and if not (because it should have been 301) then it doesn't run the query.) Easiest fix for this is to index queries 1-350 instead of just 301-350. To debug this: print out your qrels file (in docno) print out your current query vector print out the relevant document vector (known from qrels) make sure everything looks good. Another debug approach: (I've forgotten exact version 11.0 syntax, play around a bit...) smart inter run_eval.spec spec_list run_eval.spec Euse 0 Eset_query 301 Qvec Qmatch your_relevant_target_document ChrisB From smart-people-request Thu Oct 22 13:43:42 1998 Received: from scruz.net (nic.scruz.net [165.227.1.2]) by cloyd.cs.cornell.edu (8.8.8/8.8.8/M-1.12) with ESMTP id NAA22231 for ; Thu, 22 Oct 1998 13:43:22 -0400 (EDT) Received: from frankr1.mry.scruznet.com (frankr2.mry.scruznet.com [204.147.227.114]) by scruz.net (8.8.5/1.34) with SMTP id KAA25201 for ; Thu, 22 Oct 1998 10:43:15 -0700 (PDT) Reply-To: From: "Frank Raab" To: Subject: remove Date: Thu, 22 Oct 1998 10:43:18 -0700 Message-ID: <009c01bdfde3$73f6ce80$72e393cc@frankr1.mry.scruznet.com> MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_009D_01BDFDA8.C797F680" X-Priority: 3 (Normal) X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook 8.5, Build 4.71.2173.0 Importance: Normal X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V4.72.3110.3 Status: RO Content-Length: 1099 This is a multi-part message in MIME format. ------=_NextPart_000_009D_01BDFDA8.C797F680 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit For the third time, please remove me from your mailing list. I followed the instruction on solaris.hints. Though I didn't get all the files that mentioned in the hints file. Like there is no file named liblocal/libconvert/lvec_inv_tmp.c and liblocal/libretrieve/mixed.c are in my distribution. But without those file most of the compilation works fine. But I am having an Undefined Symbol Error while trying to link all the object files. The symbols recode_trie and suffix_trie both defined as extern in libindexing/triestem.c but not declared anywhere. I suppose those two variable should be declared in libindexing/trie_recode.c and libindexing/trie_suff.c respectively. But in my distribution those two files are empty. I am not sure whether I am correct about the assumption that they should be declared there or not. Does anybody have any idea about whats wrong? With best regards, --Saidul. If you don't have these files, there is something wrong with your SMART dist. I have attached a "patch" (really a tar file to extract on top of SMART) which gets SMART building cleanly under Solaris. If you get a huge amount of output in the test at the end of the diff, the smart executable probably didn't link; cd to src/smart, make all (maybe make default?), cd to src/test_adi, and run the test_adi script by hand. This happens to me all the time in Linux, and sometimes under Solaris... best o' luck! ian > -----Original Message----- > From: smart@video.dlib.vt.edu [mailto:smart@video.dlib.vt.edu] > Sent: Wednesday, November 04, 1998 12:27 AM > To: smart-people@CS.Cornell.EDU > Cc: chrisb@CS.Cornell.EDU; sbanu@vt.edu > Subject: Problem with SMART Installation > > > > Hi, > > I am trying to install SMART on SUN Solaris m/c.
