SHORE Project Call-for-Alpha Test Sites

Read This First

The original purpose of this document was to give instructions on how to become a test site for the Shore alpha release. We have now selected the sites and have released Shore to them. Once testing is done, we may consider expanding the number of sites.

The SHORE Project is looking for a few test sites for the upcoming alpha release of the SHORE software. Technical report tr1222 gives an overview of SHORE. We are planning to have the release ready by the end of September.

For the purposes of this alpha release we are seeking users who will write applications using C++/SDL. SDL (described in the above report) is similar to ODL from the ODMG-93 standard.

It would also be nice, but not mandatory, for the site to be:

Release Contents

You will notice that this release does not include documentation on how to write a value-added server (VAS -- an extension to the SHORE Server/Storage Manager that runs in the address space of the server). If you happen to be especially interested in this, we might be able to work something out.

The SHORE software will be available for Sparc SunOS 4.1.3 machines. To compile the software you will need gcc 2.6.0.

The SHORE software will be released under the same copyright restrictions as that of its predecessor, EXODUS. Permission to use, copy, modify and distribute the software and its documentation will be granted, provided that both the copyright notice and the permission notice appear in all copies of the software, derivative works or modified versions, and any portions thereof, and that both notices appear in supporting documentation.

Becoming a Test Site

If you are interested in becoming a test site, send mail to Mike Zwilling, zwilling@cs.wisc.edu. In the mail, tell us a little about your project, how you plan to use SHORE and how you meet the above requirements.
