DESCRIPTION In 1978 the owner of a huge Zairean cofee plantation called "Domaine du Katale", founded his own airline of the same name. It started operations with a Bristol Britannia 252C flying out of Goma. Up until 1984 a fleet of six Britannias of the 252C/253C and 321F series that had served with the British Royal Air Force, British Overseas Air Corporation and later many other cargo companies, and also a single Canadair CL-44-6 from the royal Canadian Air Force, lifted the Black Gold from Goma to Kinshasa and Mombasa, the Kenyan port on the Indian Ocean. Here the Coffee sacks were loaded into vessels for worldwide export. During 1980s, when coffee prices dropped rapidly , the cargo company was forced to restructure its operations and fly general cargo on domestic and international charters. For this purpose, a Boeing 707-329C was purchased from the Belgian airline Sabena in 1983. It was registered 9Q-CVG and bore the new title of Katale Aero Transprt. This aircraft was implemented on African routes and replaced the Britannias on international charter flights to Europe. In March 1990 this aircraft was damaged beyond repair when a Belgian pilot undershot Goma's runway. The airline was now left with a single Douglas DC-8-55F, 9Q-CVH, introduced to the company in 1988 to carry out the freight work. Named "Hubert", the remaining cargojet continued to fly for Katale until September 1991 when it was ferried to Ostend (Belgium) to avoid damage during a period of political unrest in Zaire. This flight ended the history of Katale Aero Transport. The DC-8 was grounded at Ostend until May 1992 when the Aircraft was sold to Kinshasa-based operator New ACS. The Zairean Transair Cargo acquired the freighter in May 1993, occasionally flying non-hush-kitted services to Ostend in 1994, but in that December it was sold to Colombia. This DC-8 had been flying since 1966, first for Capitol International Airways and then Seaboard World Airways, both American carriers, until 1974. It went to fly for the independent French carriers UTA and SFAIR until 1988. As of today it is serving the Colombian IBERO AMERICANA de CARGA.
