*************** Transocean Air Lines Boeing Stratocruiser**************** Version 2. An FS98 aircraft by Dave McQueen November 6, 1998 ******************************************************************************************* This is an update to the updated afx file from July, 98 of the Boeing Stratocruiser/C97G aircraft I made a couple of years ago for FS5.1 . Changes: November, 98: Added texture to the front area of the engines to the Eliminated a slight bleed through problem between basic the engines and the propellers(static). Included a modified pal afx file that will change the shade of yellow in FS to a richer yellow that is closer to the color Transocean's planes were painted. September, 98: Added transparent propellers; lowered the nose wheel scrape by 8 inches. With many many thanks to Alexander Remus for his detailed Transparent surfaces tutorial (see simflight.com web site), and to Tom Gibson for pointing me to a usable hex editor program and explaining to me how to make use of it. See Tom's Classic Airliner's web site (http://members.aol.com/TGFltsim/index.html) for other great propliners. July, 98: redesigned engines, wings, nose, and corrected a vertical fin error. ******************************************************************************************* e-mail: smcqueen@home.com ___________________________________________________________________________ TO INSTALL: Use a decompression program like Winzip to unzip the downloaded file to your Flight Simulator 98 Aircraft folder. You must have installed the FS98 converter by Microsoft to use this aircraft. The converter can be downloaded from the Microsoft Games site on the Internet, and also various flight simulation web pages, such as flightsim.com . (BUT DO NOT CONVERT THE FILES!!! They have already been converted!!!!) Included in this package is a pal file: fs5.pal which may be copied over your present fs5.pal file in the main texture folder of FS98. This file will alter how the color yellow is displayed. The new colors are richer and deeper than the default FS yellow color. If you want to try this file, BACK UP your present fs5.pal file by copying it to some convenient directory, or renaming it to something else; then copy the new pal file to your main texture directory. Also I highly recommend using Stephan Grille's: st377pnl.zip Size: 1,572,500 FS98 panel for the Boeing 377 Stratocruiser. The panel was designed using photographs and drawings stay as close to the original as possible. It can be found on Flightsim.com (use the search feature) IUP, or Tom Gibson's Classic Airliners site referred to above. ___________________________________________________________________________________________ Thumbnail Sketch of the Stratocruiser" The C-97 Stratofreighter/Stratotanker was derived from the B-29 and B-50 bombers. The original C-97 had a shorter B-29 fin that was later replaced with the taller B-50 fin. It was so high that the fin was hinged so that it could be folded down in order to get the airplane into the hangars of the day. 888 C-97/KC-97s were built. "The Model 367 was a cargo/transport design. to obtain the needed cargo capacity a double lobe fueslage of two intersecting sections was developed. Two circular sections were preferable to a single elipse of equivalent area to withstand stresses imposed by cabin pressurization. The cargo floor was built along the line of intersection. The lower lobe had the same diameter as the B-29 fuselage while the upper had a greater diameter and room for 134 fully-equipped troops, 3 loaded 1 and 1/2 ton trucks, or 2 light tanks in its 74 foot length. Clamshell doors were fitted into the belly ahead of the tail and built in ramps could be lowered to allow vehicles to be driven aboard. Bulk cargo was loaded by means of a hoist that ran on an overhead rail for the full length of the cabin. Two lower cargo holds ahead of and behind the wing could be loaded through outside doors." from Boeing Aircraft Since 1916 by Peter M. Bowers Nearly 20 variants were produced including the KC-97 series that were the Air Force's main air refuelers before the KC-135 replaced them. Power plant: Four Pratt and Whitney R-4360 Double Wasp radial engines of 3500 h.p. Cruising speed: 340 m.p.h (295 knots) NOTE: the FS51 airspeed indicator is calibrated in KNOTS! Range: 4200 miles (max payload) Dimensions: Span, 141 ft 3 in; Length, 110 ft 4 in; Height,38 ft 3 in ************************************************************************** Legalese: ENJOY, AND FEEL FREE TO CONTACT ME WITH SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENTS.
