I have a number of these hubs with V 2.02 of the managment software. My understanding is that the security features which you described are not yet available. If you know otherwise, I'd be interested to know what version of the management software is required. -------- From academic-firewalls-owner@net.tamu.edu Wed Aug 10 12:26:39 1994 In-Reply-To: <20309.9408100926@hons.st-andrews.ac.uk> from "Bruce Mitchell" at Aug 10, 94 10:26:32 am Content-Type: text Content-Length: 1013 Date: Wed, 10 Aug 1994 12:21:58 -0500 (CDT) Precedence: bulk From: Dave J Duchscher Reply-To: academic-firewalls@net.tamu.edu To: academic-firewalls@net.tamu.edu Subject: Re: 3Com FMS II hubs > > I was interested in your posting to the academic-firewalls list > concerning FMS II hubs. > > I have a number of these hubs with V 2.02 of the managment software. Current 3Com FMS II repeaters do not have the hardware to support eavesdropping. 3Com is working on a new ethernet chip that will have the eavesdropping capability and will replace the current chip used in the FMS II. Upgrades will be made available. I don't know the cost. We were told hardware should be available late Aug. early Sept. Software to enable the feature would be available late Sept. early Oct. Hope this clears things up. - -- David J Duchscher Texas A&M University Dave.Duchscher@net.tamu.edu CIS Network Project -------- From academic-firewalls-owner@net.tamu.edu Thu Aug 11 18:13:46 1994 In-reply-to: Your message of "Thu, 11 Aug 1994 01:00:04 EST." <199408110600.BAA01556@net.tamu.edu> Date: Fri, 12 Aug 1994 09:07:03 +1000 From: David Vu Reply-To: academic-firewalls@net.tamu.edu To: academic-firewalls@net.tamu.edu Subject: Re: 3Com FMS II hubs The D-Link UTP stackable hubs DE1200 DE1600 have had intrusion control and eavesdrop prevention for ages. How do the Dlink and 3Com compare feature wise? In areas like SNMP management etc? DO you know who is the local delaer for DLiknk so I can get some prices and brochures. DO you know who is the local delaer > for D-Link so I can get some prices and brochures. > We purchased a couple of D-Link hubs so that we could evaluate them. We found the hardware design to be excellent. Software was another matter. Here some differences that caused us to go with 3Com. Configuration: - -------------- D-Link: The only way to configure the repeater is through a PC running their software. I believe you can also configure them through SNMP after the initial setup. 3Com: You only need a vt100 to configure the unit. After the initial setup you can telnet to the box and make additional changes. Eavesdrop Protection: - --------------------- D-Link: Has eavesdrop protection, but to activate, each port must be configured with the ethernet address of the device that is on that port. No learn and lock. 3Com: Will have eavesdrop soon. Unit supports the more standard sets of features for eavesdrop protection. Learn and lock, etc. Statistics: - ----------- D-Link: Only available through SNMP. 3Com: Available through SNMP, and through both the telnet and serial consoles. Software Upgrade: - ----------------- D-Link: ROM replacement. 3Com: Flash PROM. New software image downloaded via TFTP. Some of this may have changed on the D-Link side. Our units are at least six months old. Hope this helps, - -- David J Duchscher Texas A&M University Dave.Duchscher@net.tamu.edu CIS Network Project
