Dear SCO Customer, Support Level Supplement (SLS) ptf7045g, the Intel Microcode Driver for UnixWare 7, provides the proper microcode fixes to the system's Pentium Pro, Pentium II, Celeron, and Pentium II Xeon processors. SLS ptf7045g provides new processor errata ucode from the Intel Corporation. SLS ptf7045f added the ability to perform a quiet install. SLS ptf7045e provided January 2000 P6 microcode updates from Intel. SLS ptf7045g addresses all of the issues listed below: 1. Some models and steppings of the Intel Pentium Pro processor, Intel Pentium II processor, Intel Pentium II Xeon processor, Intel Pentium III processor, Intel Pentium III Xeon processor, and Intel Celeron processor may contain design defects or errors known as errata, which may cause the processor to deviate from published specifications. Some of these errata can be fixed by updating the microcode of the processor at system startup. This SLS installs microcode updates provided by the Intel Corporation to do that. 2. An Intel Pentium III or Pentium III Xeon processor has a Processor Serial Number, which can be accessed by software using the "cpuid 3" instruction. However, some administrators prefer that their systems cannot be identified in this way. When installing this SLS on UnixWare 7.0.0, 7.0.1, 7.1.0 or 7.1.1, you may choose that Processor Serial Numbers be erased, immediately and whenever the system reboots. UnixWare 7.1.1 disables Processor Serial Numbers unless ENABLE_PSN=YES in /stand/boot. Contents -------- /etc/conf/node.d/msr /etc/conf/pack.d/msr/Driver.o /etc/conf/mdevice.d/msr /etc/conf/sdevice.d/msr /etc/p6updata /sbin/p6update Software Notes and Recommendations ---------------------------------- SLS ptf7045g should only be installed on: UnixWare 7 Release 7.0.0, 7.0.1, 7.1.0, 7.1.1 SLS ptf7045g supersedes all previous versions of ptf7045; however, it is not necessary to remove any previous versions of ptf7045 prior to installing SLS ptf7045g. Any P6 microcode updates needed are applied when ptf7045g is installed, and by "/sbin/p6update" after the system has run "/sbin/psradm -n -a" to online all processors (on entry to init state 1, 2, 3 or 4). If the installer chose to erase Processor Serial Numbers, that is done at the same time. SLS ptf7045g is only of benefit if your processor is a genuine Intel processor of the P6 family: Pentium Pro, Pentium II, Pentium II Xeon, Pentium III, Pentium III Xeon, or Intel Celeron processor. However, ptf7045g can be safely installed on all other processor types. If your system is running any libraries or commands that are contained in this SLS, then these programs will continue to run with the old versions of these libraries or commands until the the system is rebooted. Note that when all necessary patches have been installed, it is recommended that you reboot the system at the earliest opportunity. This will ensure that no programs continue to run with the old libraries or commands. Installation Instructions ------------------------- 1. Download the ptf7045g.Z file to the /tmp directory on your machine. 2. As root, uncompress the file and add the SLS package to your system using these commands: $ su Password: # uncompress /tmp/ptf7045g.Z # pkgadd -d /tmp/ptf7045g # rm /tmp/ptf7045g Alternatively, this SLS package may be installed in quiet mode, that is, without displaying the release notes and asking for installation confirmation. To do this, use these commands: $ su Password: # uncompress /tmp/ptf7045g.Z # pkgadd -qd /tmp/ptf7045g all # rm /tmp/ptf7045g 3. There is no need to reboot the system after installing this SLS package, but the kernel may be rebuilt when the system is next rebooted. The release notes displayed prior to installation can be found in: /var/sadm/pkg/ptf7045/install/ptf7045.txt Removal Instructions -------------------- 1. As root, remove the SLS package using these commands: $ su Password: # pkgrm ptf7045 2. Reboot the system after removing this SLS package. If you have questions regarding this SLS, or the product on which it is installed, please contact your software supplier.
